Racing the Alleys of Victoria

Downtown Mischief at the 2014 Victoria Recyclistas Alleycat raceA few weeks ago on Nov 1st, Recyclistas Bike Shop hosted an Alleycat race. It was organized by Radar Hill programmer Shannon Graham and sponsored by our client, Accent Inns.

On Saturday night, the day after Halloween, 23 racers and their respective cheerleading factions met at Recyclistas to find out where the race would take them. Everyone drew a slip of paper out of an envelope to get the location of the first checkpoint, and at 7:30 on the dot, raced off on their bicycles into the night.

The race route went from Recyclistas to Gorge Narrows Bridge, to the top of High Rock Park in Esquimalt, to Beacon Hill Park, to an obscure park bench on top of a ridiculous hill in Oak Bay, to Pemberton Park, to Spokes (the student bike shop located at UVic), to Smith Hill Reservoir, and finally back to Recyclistas. No one knew the checkpoints in advance. At each checkpoint, racers got a slip of paper with the address of the next one on it.

In an Alleycat race, local knowledge is prized above speed and fast bikes. Arthur Taylor, a software developer who took second place, finished building his bike less than 20 minutes before the race started. He got a late start, but knowing the town well from hundreds of late night explorations and years of bike commuting gave him an edge.

Mark Van Akker is a teacher at Vic High School. He only started cycling as a hobby a few months ago, with his toddler in tow for resistance training. But again, he knew the most efficient routes around town and beat everyone back to the shop. That’s the joy of Alleycats — being a powerhouse isn’t the only way to win, and non-athletes can have just as much fun and chance of winning.

The race was about 23km long in total. The last rider arrived at the shop at 9:45pm, where a keg of beer and a hip hop crew called Downtown Mischief were waiting to start the after party. About 10 riders dropped out along the way, including one who memorably failed to pace herself and stopped for a puke break in Beacon Hill Park. She won a special prize — the “Puker Prize” — for the racer who tried the hardest.

Prizes included a night at Accent Inns, a free haircut from B Sharp Salon, dinner at Pluto’s Diner, a tune-up from North Park Bikes, and assorted bike accessories from Broad St. Cycles and Recyclistas.

Everyone who participated had a good time and a lot of them said that they were keen to come out again for the next race. Anyone who is interested should contact shannon@rocketships.ca, and stay tuned for announcements in February 2015.

1st place: Mark Van Akker
2nd place: Arthur Taylor
3rd place: Parker Bloom

Transcense: Empowering the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Young woman with hearing aidFor a deaf person, a group conversation is a difficult situation. For most people, it’s a great opportunity, with ideas flowing and all kinds of social cues going out. For a deaf person, it’s usually an exhausting confusion as they try to hold the thread of a conversation that’s changing every instant.

Over the years I’ve heard of and investigated lots of options for solving this problem. The usual ones are:

  • Get an interpreter (I don’t know sign language though)
  • Hire a live captioner (120 bucks an hour makes for a pretty expensive Friday night at your buddy’s house)
  • Get a friend to help you (not a single person on earth who has a long enough attention span)
  • Only hang out in small groups (makes for a dull social life)
  • Say “what?” a lot (at least my friends find it entertaining, even if I don’t)

When I heard about Transcense’s IndieGoGo fundraiser and beta program, I contacted them right away. They’re making a phone app that captions speech in real-time, separating different speakers with different coloured speech balloons. Voice-to-text technology has been around for decades, but to date, as far as I know, it’s not good. Certainly not good enough to be useful in everyday life (try YouTube’s automatic caption service for an entertaining demo).

To my surprise their lead developer, Thibault, Skyped me from San Francisco to talk about it and show me how it works. From what I could see in the brief demo we had, it was pretty good. The things I said, distorted through my mic and his computer’s speakers, received by his phone in their SF office, were transcribed correctly alongside his half of the conversation, with our respective voices in different coloured speech bubbles. There was a tiny bit of lag, but it seemed like it might be short enough to allow me to follow the conversation and keep up.

So I’m hopeful that they’ll be successful. They’ve been at work for a year or so and have venture capital funding, not to mention a guaranteed user base if they are as good as hoped. I’ll certainly be signing up for the paid version.

You can visit their website at Transcence.com.

Christmas at Radar Hill

For Jocularity Day, as named by Roger, we received some fabulous shirts matching our personalities. Check out the photos on Facebook and Google+. We played a fun game in which we had to fight over the last present using dice and oven mitts. View the video on YouTube. A big Thank You to Holmes Realty for the amazing Christmas Pizza. On Christmas Eve we held our staff Christmas party. Thanks to Jennifer for organizing this awesome catered lunch in our office! There was great food, lots of laughter and great conversation. We all ate too much (but it was worth it) and enjoyed the fine company of each other. It was a great way to start of the Christmas break and we look forward to making some new annual traditions.

Jennifer’s New Cat

Jennifer's cats

After Jennifer’s cat Weezer’s sudden passing in the fall, Jennifer’s other cat Foo had become very lonely. Foo couldn’t be left alone as he needs company so Jennifer and her fiancé Dave set out to find a new friend for Foo. After a lot of time searching and careful consideration they found Buttercup at the SPCA and it couldn’t have been a better match! They have been getting along great and Buttercup has really helped Foo with friendship and comfort from the loss of Weezer. Just after one week of knowing each other they were already snugging up. In the photo Foo is the grey cat and Buttercup is the tuxedo.

Now a word from our sponsor:

February: What’s up on the Hill?

Canadian Blood Services Certificate of Recognition to Radar Hill for filling their 2014 Partners For Life goalEnjoying the unusually mild February weather? It has been a full month at Radar Hill. In this issue:

Major Milestone: VREB

Radar Hill was chosen from several applicants to construct the new website for the Victoria Real Estate Board. This project represents a major milestone for our company and recognition of our position at the forefront of Responsive Web Design and data processing. Hundreds of listings and thousands of photos are appended on an hourly basis and displayed in a format that is fully optimized across all screen sizes. With nearly 60,000 page views per month we were challenged to maximize download speed, retain data integrity, and display it in an attractive presentation across all viewing devices.

Our People on the Hill

Ten Year Anniversary: Megan Newhouse, our Director of Awesomeness, is celebrating her ten-year anniversary with Radar Hill this month. Since she joined us, Megan has gotten married, bought a house, and given birth to two children. Her most recent is Declan, born Saturday January 17, weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces. He is a baby brother for Kieran. Congratulations Megan, thank you for being an invaluable part of our team over the past decade, and see you when your maternity leave ends.

Five Year Anniversary: Graphic Designer Ken Hamilton is celebrating five years at Radar Hill. Congratulations Ken! As a break from creating awesome websites, Ken likes to display his musical talent playing banjo and guitar in the office.

More Musical Talent: Graphic Designer Julie Melano plays percussion, which includes snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, and drum sets, with the Greater Victoria Concert Band. She has some spring concerts coming up. If you have musical talent and want to join, the band is always looking for more musicians.

A Groupie and a Roadie: Graphic Designer Mike Culhane is a groupie and a roadie. His wife and father-in-law play in The Burton Bunch, this month’s Band of the Month at the UVic Student Pub. Mike has been there every Wednesday night, supporting and helping setup and takedown.

Not a Player, but a Racer: Back in November, Programmer Shannon Graham organized an alleycat race, sponsored by our client Accent Inns. Read her story:Racing the Alleys of Victoria.

Kendra’s Knee: Our Google Specialist Kendra Savich went into surgery on Tuesday to have a loose body removed from her knee that has been interfering with her walk since high school. It was a simple laparoscopic procedure, and after recovering from her anesthetic, was back in the office on Thursday. She thanks everyone at Victoria Surgery for being extremely professional and welcoming, and Dr. Nelson from ReBalance for performing the procedure. For the time being she is keeping her leg propped up at her desk and is using a crutch to help with stairs.

Andrea’s Break: Office Administrator Andrea Chan reports that “In the middle of the night of October 19th my daughter, Brielle, woke up crying desperately for her water. So, downstairs I trudged, counting the stairs as I go so as not to miss any. Not a problem, I’ve done these stairs thousands of times before. And, I missed the last stair, left foot down first and crack! An expletive was spoken, and I, in very much pain, hopped back upstairs. By this time everyone was up. And, the amazing daughter that I have came to my side to make sure her mommy was ok. The next day I went for an x-ray to reveal that I had broken the 5th metatarsal in my left foot. With an air cast and after many appointments at the hospital, it is healing nicely.”

Blood and Recognition: Certificate of RecognitionOn behalf of Radar Hill, Client Care Coordinator Jennifer Dempsey attended the Partners For Life Recognition Lunch presented by Canadian Blood Services on February 19th. As part of the Partners for Life program, we pledge how many blood donations we will make. Last year we pledged 15 and exceeded our goal with 16 donations! Canadian Blood Services thanked us, along with many other companies that are part of the program, with a lunch in the Ivy Ballroom at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. Guest speakers included members of the McSweeney family, three of whom would not be alive today if it wasn’t for blood donors. It was touching to hear their stories and reflect on how thankful they are to be alive thanks to donors.

almond branch with pink blossomsThe Vernal Equinox happened, officially on Friday at 3:45 pm Island Time when the sun was right over the equator. On our pyramid building we did not do what they do in Teotihuacán at the Pyramid of the Sun. We did, however, write about news and events from Radar Hill. In this issue:

Our People on the Hill

The Pyramid: Now that Steve Nash Fitness World has left our building – our pyramid-shaped building at the corner of Douglas and Cloverdale – and moved to Uptown, the three floors they occupied since the early 1980’s are being completely gutted and will be available as office/mixed use space. Looking for new space in a centrally located, architecturally significant building with plenty of parking? You would be close to the Radar Hill offices, and simply need to step into the elevator and come up to see us. Contact Richmond Property Group for opportunities.

Twelve Year Anniversary: Congratulations to our office administrator, Andrea Chan. On March 17 she celebrated her twelve year anniversary at Radar Hill. What a time it has been! “Twelve years ago we hired Andrea as our office administrator. Since we like to look after and provide for our staff, we hired a future husband for Andrea” as Radar Hill co-owner Dan says. Andrea met and married Garrett Chan, our former graphic designer. Thank you Andrea for all your hard work – we do not know what we would do without you.

Speeches and A Cultural Mosaic: Radar Hill co-owner Shawn O’Hara will be co-hosting Victoria – A Cultural Mosaic, at the Harbour Towers Hotel on May 8-9. The annual Toastmasters conference only comes to Victoria about twice per decade. Highlights include two keynote speeches, education sessions and the International Speech Contest. It’s open to everyone, not just Toastmasters. Advertising at the convention or in the program will reach 250+ attendees from across British Columbia. For details, see www.D21SpringConference.org or contact Shawn.

Speechless: It was a dark and stormy night when Shawn’s eldest daughter, Jessica, pulled up to the house with her passenger. Jessica was returning from two weeks with family in the Fraser Valley, the passenger from much farther. Five minutes later, Shawn walked into the living room when Jessica asked him to “come help with something“. As he walked into the living room and saw her his first thought was that “she changed her hair colour“. Then he realized it was not Jessica! It was his next daughter, Caitlin, whom he had not seen in almost a year. He was shocked, speechless, and frozen to the spot for a moment, until his brain caught up. Caitlin is on a student exchange through the University of Victoria and is studying history at Aberystwyth University in Aberystwyth, Wales. She had secretly arranged with Jessica to come home for her three-week Easter break. Jessica had picked her up at the airport on her way back from the Fraser Valley. What a shock to everyone in the family, as captured in a hilarious video (don’t expect it on YouTube anytime soon), especially Shawn, who is rarely surprised or shocked, about anything.

Power Down: A few weeks ago Roger’s family bought a Home Energy Monitor. The monitor displays power consumption in real time. No big deal, he thought. Gimmick? Checking in periodically on how much power the house is using has become a kind of game for his entire family, to see how little power they use. His most recent bill from BC Hydro was $150 less than he thought it was going to be and he blames this ‘gimmick’ device. Let us know how you compare to the Whitson family. Their record low is 4.6 cents an hour. “Beat that!” Roger says. “No, we are not sitting around freezing. We’ve all become more aware, and that’s the savings.”

Hitting the Bullseye: Jennifer’s mother, Heather, currently holds 2 national records in the Master Women Hunter Division for Indoor Archery & Field Archery. This past weekend she competed in the 3D Canadian Indoor Archery Championships in Cloverdale, BC. Jen took a trip over to the mainland to watch her mother compete and finish in third place to win bronze!

May: What’s Up on the Hill?

Celebrating 14 Years - Radar Hill's 14 year anniversary (with a cupcake and candle)On April 15, Radar Hill celebrated fourteen years in business. We have grown from the original three owners of Shawn, Roger, and Dan, with a small handful of clients, to eleven staff and a wide range of business and non-profit clients. We are now one of the largest and most stable website design and development companies on Vancouver Island. Thank you for your support! Here is an update on the past couple of months. In this issue:

The Radar Hill Cup

This year marked the 10th Anniversary of the Radar Hill Cup, a hotly contested championship between a group of hockey players who play together every Friday through the hockey season. Radar Hill co-owners Roger and Dan have been consistently playing for more than ten years, but in 2004 started the tradition of a wind-up game and festivities sponsored by Radar Hill. A skills contest, swag, and semi-serious awards are part of the fun, and Roger and Dan have a great time hosting this every year.

Victoria Church Website Hacked by ISIS

In the news, a Saanich church appears to have been targeted by ISIS. As stated in the CHEK news report: “The website for the North Douglas Pentecostal Church was hacked… corrupting all the content and all information lost.” As a website design, development and maintenance company we are always very interested in these security breaches in hopes of protecting our clients from similar attacks. As evidenced by recent attacks on large companies such as Target and Sony Pictures, since it may be impossible to prevent an attack from happening, no matter how many safeguards are in place, a proper response, or Plan B is crucial: Have procedures in place to recover from an attack and minimize damage. The church claimed that “…all the content and all information was lost.” This church is not a client of ours, and this terrible experience leads us to wonder why they did not have a Plan B. At Radar Hill we keep a series of backups of every website: incremental on our server, a local static copy, and an off-site version at a secure location. We also have notification systems in place. If anything happens to one of our websites, we work through a documented process of stopping the attack, and reinstating the website with the most recent uncorrupted backup. This church was set up with a do-it-yourself website platform, and appears to have neglected to do security and backups. With pre-planning and due diligence, this tragedy would have been avoided.

Jennifer’s New Condo

Our Client Care Coordinator Jennifer and her fiancé David have just bought their first property, using the services of a variety of Radar Hill clients. Thanks go to their REALTOR® Gary McInnis of Pemberton Holmes for doing an amazing job of helping them find the perfect home. In Jennifer’s words “Gary was great at educating us and his incite and wisdom provided us with an amazing home buying experience.” Thanks to Tony Joe and Mullin DeMeo Barristers and Solicitors for assisting in the purchase process. Jennifer and David are moving in this week are excited to be home owners working with Boorman’s Property Management at their new condo.

Andrea in Hawaii

Recently, our esteemed office administrator Andrea took some well-deserved time off for rest and relaxation with a cruise to Hawaii. Sadly, she brought along her Mother-in-law and 3-year old daughter, so resting and relaxing were the two things that she didn’t get to experience on the trip. All joking aside, they had a great time and learned many things. Andrea learned that the hallways on a cruise ship are long enough to tire out even the most energetic 3-year old, and that 24/7 access to a hot tub is “a good thing”. Andrea also found out that she is a gifted gambler, more than tripling her investment every time she sat down in the casino. Unfortunately, she only sat down once and after $9 became $30 she was immediately spooked, counted herself lucky and quit.

Interestingly, Andrea also discovered that taking lava rocks from the state of Hawaii is illegal and punishable with hefty fines. Upon return to Canada she found a pebble in her shoe, technically making her a felon and a fugitive from the US legal system. She gave the rock to her nephew, earning her incredible street cred with the 12-year old while simultaneously making him an accomplice in her crime. Nice work Andrea. We are glad you had fun, and are happy to have you back.

Twitter and Real Estate

At Radar Hill, we are always looking for ways to make life a little easier for our clients. Our latest development is a Twitter share button for VREB listing administration. Just click the Tweet button for a property and you will get the address, price, and link to the listing already filled out and ready to go — you can make any changes you want, then simply click Send. Staying on top of your social media accounts can be challenging, but this tool will make it a few seconds quicker. Let us know if you are using it or not, if you want a quick tutorial, or if you would like to see Share buttons for other social media sites such as Facebook or Pinterest.

Dust Day

A few weeks ago we had a Dust Day at Radar Hill. It is very similar to a Snow Dayexcept that it lacks a certain magical appeal. With the exodus of Fitness World, the floors below us are being gutted and prepared to be converted into office space. We had noise, we had dust, we had the water turned off and we even had the elevator go on the fritz. “Enough!” we cried, and sent everybody out into the sunshine. Shawn was thrilled to put into action his Business Interruption Contingency Plan and things went off without a hitch:

  • Staff worked comfortably from home remotely or at their favorite coffee shop
  • Dan conducted two scheduled appointments off-site over a coffee at Starbucks
  • The phones were forwarded to another location and answered as usual

It was a great way to practice Disaster Planning in response to something less dire than a tsunami or a zombie attack. Staying operational and accessible is an obligation to our clients and we were happy to continue with business as usual even under adverse circumstances.

Toastmasters Spring Conference

Last weekend Radar Hill co-owner had a great time as co-Master of Ceremonies, with Linda Quesnel, of the Victoria – A Cultural Mosaic Toastmasters District 21 Spring Conference. This annual event, attended by 250 people from across British Columbia, is held in Victoria every five years. This was one of the rare occasions when Shawn wore his tuxedo, for the evening gala. With input from Radar Hill staff Jennifer and Julie, Shawn created the 28-page program book, receiving heaps of praise for its high quality and professionalism. Julie also designed a beautiful souvenir lapel pin for the event.

Responsive Web Design for REALTORS®

Statistics show that Tourism, Restaurants and Real Estate websites have the highest rates of browsing by mobile device. We have seen tablet and smartphone usage grow to account for more than 50% of web traffic to some of our Real Estate websites over the last few years. Radar Hill has been at the forefront of Responsive Web Design for several years and we are proud of the work we have done for the Victoria Real Estate Board and several of the prominent Victoria agencies: Holmes Realty, Pemberton Holmes, Boorman’s, Brown Bros, Equitex, DFH and Royal LePage by the Sea. Additionally, many individual REALTORS® have embraced the new mobile reality and have either had us update their older websites or employed us to build new:

As always, feel free to contact Radar Hill to discuss upgrades and improvements to your web display.

Social Media Camp

This week, Shawn and Jennifer will be attending Social Media Camp, Canada’s largest Social Media Conference held in Victoria each year. If you are attending, let’s meet up IRL (In Real Life). Contact us through Twitter: @RadarHill or @SunOnHerbs.

Bike to Work Week 2015

bikes at Radar HillThis year for Bike to Work Week (BTWW) we registered a team. Over half of our office signed up to participate! Our team logged a total of 218 km the week of May 25th with some staff cycling every day and others just keeping with the fair weather.

The celebration stations that were set up before and after work were great stops along the way with the free snacks, beverages and contests. If you forgot to eat breakfast on your way to work, there was enough fruit and cinnamon buns (And of course, coffee!) to fill you up on your way to work.

On May 29th, BTWW had a weeks end BBQ and the weather couldn’t have been better! At 24 degrees with sunshine, free ice cream and hot dogs the final celebration was a blast. It really ended up being a kick off to summer and a great encouragement to start cycling on a regular basis. Check out the photos from the BBQ with our staff, Shawn, Kendra and Jennifer.

For us, BTWW doesn’t start or stop there. We have several staff that regularly cycle to work – rain or shine – and BTWW has helped encourage more of our staff to start biking to work more often. Shawn has even been cycling to work regularly for over 13 years!  Not only is it great exercise, but cycling is great for the environment and can be a relaxing way to start and end your day.

Stay-cation 2015

Stay-cationThis summer our family decided on a ‘stay-cation’. Luckily we live in Victoria and there are a zillion things to do. Each of us added to a list of things we wanted to do.

Note to those of you that left our beautiful city or decided not to visit you didn’t miss too much – just everything! Here’s an incomplete list:

Lookout Lake, Colwood: might just be the weirdest place you will find a lake.

Lone Tree Hill, Langford: an easy trail up to a decent view.

Sooke Pot Holes, Sooke: our thing is to park at the bottom and walk/swim the river right up to the campsite.

Witty’s Lagoon, Metchosin: if you hit it right the tide is out for long, long way. A great beach on the West side.

Island View Beach, Central Saanich: a great beach on the East side.

Pink Bicycle, Victoria: very good food – try the deep fried Mars bar.

Barb’s Fish and Chips, James Bay: great fish and chips.

The Fish Store, James Bay: oh man! The selection is incomparable and fresh.

Matheson Lake: ok, you’re probably picking up on a lot of dog walking and hiking by now. Very quiet and beautiful location.

Snowbirds: we watched from Beacon Hill Park – we were there!

DSW: on opening day for some serious shoe shopping! (Perhaps not a tourist attraction but it was our the list.)

Thetis Lake: great pathways to enjoy and little Thetis allows for dogs to get wet.

Beaver Lake:  this park area also includes Elk Lake. I had no idea how big it is. Dogs and horses (on a lot of the trails) are permitted.

Victoria Harbour Ferry: so much fun! I really enjoyed listening to the questions “real” tourists asked the boat captain.

Science World, Vancouver:  this turned into a wonderful surprise. Wish we had scheduled more time for this attraction.

Peaceful Restaurant, Vancouver: from an episode of Dinners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Very yummy.

IKEA – when on the mainland! When are they coming back to the Island?

Ross Bay Cemetery Tour – the kids were bored silly but Tracy and I enjoyed the history.

Beacon Drive-In:  mmmm…ice cream.

Royal Roads University: lots of trails and beautiful scenery.

Eagle Wing Tours:  seeing whales is guaranteed. Ask about the time whales closed the inner harbour airport.

Dragon Boats: checked out the festival. So much enthusiasm from the participants!

Cellulitis – Again!

Pins, needles and fire.

Imagine your leg has fallen asleep and is now waking with pins and needles. Then light it on fire.

Two years ago (2013) I contracted this nasty infection called cellulitis. I remember sitting at my desk trying to convince myself that I had the energy to ride my motorcycle home safely. Turns out I did make it home safely that afternoon two years ago but after the ride home it was three days before I got out of bed. I only got out of bed at Tracy’s (my wife) insistence that I was really sick.

Like most I thought some chicken soup and sleep would put me right. “My body has fought off everything else,” I thought to myself. Nope. Not this time. My kidneys began to shut down. The infection had crawled up my leg and into my groin. I laid down and took all the medicine they gave me. After ten days of intravenous treatment at the Jubilee‘s infectious disease out patient lab I continued taking “the good drugs” for ten more days.

Scared but mending.

It looks yucky but it’s mending well.

So when the same signs of infection showed again two weeks ago (2015) we didn’t wait – off to emergency! An unfortunate effect of this type of infection is that I am more susceptible to infection now. The infection also leaves scarring within the veins restricting blood flow. This means I’m trying to bring sexy back with compression socks.

I’m good now. Almost finished the course of antibiotics prescribed. Here’s a few pictures to turn your lunch.

More yucky pictures.

Looking Back On The Year

Radar Hill programmer Shannon cradling Dan's wheaten terrier, Oliver. In difficult moments such as these (the internet is down), we take time to reflect on the past year of achievements, struggles, and good times.

Here at Radar Hill, it’s been a busy year. As a programmer, I spend most of my time burrowed away in the back room. I’ve got Lady Gaga in my headphones and pages of code spread out on both monitors. When Dan or Shawn bring a client to the office, they parade past me so I can glance up and say “sup?” and they can prove that their code monkeys exist.

And it seems like that happened a lot this year? So that must mean that business is good? Cool!

It was a busy year for me too. I helped out with a lot of cool websites — here are some of my favourites:

For VREB.org, I made an XML feed for the monthly VREB newsletter — this means other Realtors can publish it on their sites. The newsletter is a great way to keep your eye on the Victoria real estate market. What’s going up, what’s going down, is it time to jump ship and move to Duncan yet? As a millennial who hopes to own a home someday, I subscribe so I’ll understand the historical context of Victoria’s real estate market when I’m ready to buy.

On My Mondo Trading‘s site, Julie and I rolled out an online store for their remarkable, one-of-a-kind First Nations artworks. The Mondo team required quite a lot of customization for their store, which isn’t easily done through a Shopify or Amazon Partners back end. We were able to give them exactly what they needed with very little trouble via a custom setup. For instance, most out-of-the-box online shops will assume that you have a big inventory for each item and will give you lots of handy features to deal with it. But Mondo’s inventory is all unique. Once an item is sold, it’s GONE. But maybe they still want to keep tabs on it? After all, the product shots on their own are fairly remarkable pieces of art.

So we customized it with the assumption that there is only ever going to be one item for each SKU, and updated the nouns in the links and so on. Little things like that make the difference between a professional store you can trust with your thousands of dollars, and a hacky mess. No one wants to buy anything from a hacky mess, no matter how much they like the product.

I hope more customers open online stores next year, because the software is fun to work with. We’ve got lots of great ideas for further improvements.

Another fun one was the Celebrate A Life site for the Victoria Hospice Society. This is one of my favourite non-profits, an opinion shared by most of the office here.

Some people like Christmas and some hate it, but most people have a lot of strong emotions associated with this time of year. Myself, my family came to Victoria to spend Christmas with my nana and papa (we’re from Campbell River). Now we all live in Victoria, but Nana and Papa have passed. We still have Christmas dinner together, but it’s different without Nana in the kitchen trying to stuff everyone with appetizers, and Papa hanging out in the living room telling war stories.

The Hospice Foundation is more familiar than most with people who are struggling with the feeling of someone missing. They asked for a website where people they’ve worked with can put up a few words in tribute to people they’ve lost this year (or any year). Mike and I got to work on that, and we’re really pleased with the result.

Besides all that, I prevented a ton of spam, fought off hackers (there was one morning when we were full-on pounding the keyboards CSI-style as fast as we could to track down the source of a hack that defaced several of our client’s websites. So much fun!), and wrote some truly poetic emails for frustrated customers.

I learned a lot and hope you did too. Merry whatever-you-celebrate, Shannon.

Victoria Hospice Launches New Celebrate A Life Website
Great Websites Launched for Great Clients

Why Radar Hill? We want to hear from you! Tell us what we’re doing right, what could be better, and what you love the most! Click to tell us…

El DañoDan

In a brilliant execution of foresight, Dan recently had his perimeter drains replaced in advance of the heavy rains in November. Of course, Dan looked to our extensive client list to find the right company to do this work. Luckily, Radar Hill designed and developed a website for Victoria Drain Services many years ago and has enjoyed a great working relationship with the owner Dave Lloyd ever since. Thus, it was both an easy decision and a firsthand educational experience for Dan. Victoria Drain Services took care to keep the disruption to a minimum, did a great job, and put everything back in order. Dan can now enjoy wet winters like the rest of us.

Roger’s Leg

Roger had another scare with his leg. His arms are scary enough, considering he can bench press 400 pounds, and throw a softball at 120 kilometers per hour. But that’s a good scary. This was a scary scare! Recall in 2013 Roger ended up in the hospital with cellulitis, which prompted Dan and Shawn, his two business partners, to verify the company’s succession plans. This recent outbreak indicates his susceptibility to cellulitis. Read more and see the photos…

Goodbye Sasha

Sasha, Shawn's poodle whippet dogShawn’s poodle whippet cross, Sasha, passed away peacefully at the ripe old age of 16 years, 8 months, and 14 days. That would put her at over 100 in dog years. Born in Glenora in the Cowichan Valley, Sasha was an incredibly fast runner who excelled at chasing balls, thanks to her whippet genes. Even with her small stature she was a great long distance runner who became quite muscular as a result of doing 20 kilometer runs with Shawn as he trained for half marathons.

Kendra on Google

Our resident Google Specialist Kendra got an extra challenge this September – when she went to renew her annual Google AdWords certification, she found that Google was offering custom Google Specialist certificates to any certified agents who completed all five available AdWords exams, plus the one fundamentals exam. From September 7th to 11th she studied hard, attended webinar exam reviews, and aced all six with flying colours. Kendra is now certified to run every kind of AdWords campaign: Search, Display, Video, Shopping, and Mobile, and is happily awaiting her framed certificate to come in the mail.

google-analyticsBut it seems like even that isn’t enough: Kendra also met with our regional AdWords representative from Google in person in Vancouver, is preparing to renew her Analytics certification, and is looking into applying to be a Certified Publisher Partner so that she can handle AdSense on behalf of clients as well (allowing our clients to offer advertising space on their websites rather than just advertising themselves). All while managing our existing AdWords clients above and beyond industry averages. It’s been a busy quarter!

Celebrate A Life
A Website for Victoria Hospice

We launched a new website for Victoria Hospice for their Celebrate A Life campaign. Radar Hill graphic designer Mike Culhane developed the design, including optimizing it to display well on smartphones – a specialty of the team at Radar Hill. Programmer Shannon Graham developed the back end ability to post tributes. Everyone here at Radar Hill was very excited to be included with Victoria Hospice’s latest work to aid those with memories to share.

Read the press release from Victoria Hospice.
The passing of a loved one is never welcomed with anticipation, but the good work taken on by those within this organization can make the healing process a time of inner peace. Missing a loved one this season? Post a tribute at www.CelebrateALifeVictoria.ca.

Visiting Radar Hill & Office Spaces

Radar Hill is located at 3301 Douglas Street on the 5th FloorSince Steve Nash Fitness World moved to Uptown last year our office building has been under major renovations.

The entrance has changed: When coming to visit our office, you will now come in through the Douglas Street entrance when driving or walking. Come through the nice glass entrance to the lobby and take the elevator to our top floor office. The lower level parkade is closed for renovations. For the last week of March and the beginning of April, both parkade levels may be closed for renovations. You can park at Standard Furniture on Cloverdale and walk over.

With 3 floors empty, and now beautifully renovated, there is plenty of lovely office space available. If you’d like to work nearby (and be able to stop by more readily for our summer BBQs) you can contact Richmond Property Group or Bob Law about leasing opportunities.

We Are Hiring!

We are adding to the team at Radar Hill and have an opening for a phenomenal, multi-talented Front End / Website Developer. Do you have the skills and aptitude to join us?

See our job posting to apply or pass it on to someone you know would be a great fit!

Happy Anniversary Andrea!

Andrea celebrates 13 years at Radar HillCongratulations to Andrea, who is celebrating her 13th year with Radar Hill this month.

Andrea Keeps our office running, helps clients with phone and email support and is the familiar smiling face that greets everyone as they come to our office. She makes great coffee and we couldn’t imagine how we could get anything done without her. Thank you Andrea, for sticking with us all these years and we look forward to the many more to come!

Dog and Rat

Shawn's dog and ratOne of the O’Hara dogs, Mia, an American Cocker Spaniel, passed away peacefully but suddenly after 10 years, 10 months, and 24 days, due to the sudden onset of a massive internal infection. She gave good hugs, and was like a little kid in a black fur coat, or a snow suit with big mitts. A week later, their pet rat, Willow, passed away at the ripe old rat age of 25 months. She liked to run and climb, and was affectionate. Photo is Willow resting on their last remaining rat, Rose.

A Magical Christmas in Disneyland

Jennifer travels to Disneyland and meets Jack and Sally from Nightmare Before ChristmasFor Christmas, Jennifer left us and headed down to Disneyland with her fiance’s family.

She met up with her 4 nieces (3 triplets under 2 and one 5 year-old) and it was quite a handful! The parks were very busy but the weather was beautiful and spending time with family was amazing while enjoying all the magic Disneyland has to offer.

It was her first visit ever to Disneyland and she had a blast going on all the rides and meeting the characters. Jennifer mentioned that her favourite was meeting Jack and Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas!

Catching Rays in Mexico

With two little kids under 4 years old, Dan was in need of a vacation more than anyone in the office. Unfortunately, he and his wife decided to take their kids along to Mexico in January and so they never really had any time off. However, there was warm weather, a fabulous beach and a very nice pool where the kids could frolic and play under the attentive gaze of their exhausted parents. Dan and Violet built many fine sand castles that were immediately destroyed by 2 year-old Erik. Good times.

Sunshine and Snow

Andrea recently took a trip to Winnipeg with her husband and 4 year-old daughter. All-in-all a great visit with her family. She attended the Festival de Voyageur, a vast variety of music artists and activities. They enjoyed sledding, horse drawn sleigh rides and a diverse selection of delicious foods. A great time was had by all.

Broken Bones

Jennifer breaks her fingerJennifer recently broke one of her fingers during an intense soccer game. As a goal keeper she made a great goal save, but one of her fingers just didn’t make it.
She’s been into see a surgeon and thankfully it’s a minor break that will not require surgery, just plenty or recovery time. We thank you for your patience when emailing with her over the next 6 weeks as typing takes a little more time when she’s down a limb.

Google Analytics Referral Spam

There has been a big increase in referral spam coming through Google Analytics website statistics the past few weeks. Referral spam is when a disreputable website accesses your website in a way that makes them appear in your statistics as a referral (a site that is sending your site traffic). They do not actually send your website traffic, and they bank on people being curious enough to visit their website to see where the “traffic” is coming from, at which point they try to scam them into buying bogus SEO or traffic packages.
Some of the most common referral spammers are Semalt, TrafficMonetizer/WebMonetizer, DailyRank, Buttons For Website, and 100 Dollars SEO. At Radar Hill we are currently in the process of filtering their fake traffic out of all reports, but this process doesn’t remove them from past statistics. Because of this, you might see them appear in your referral statistics for June, and your overall website traffic may appear higher than usual. Don’t worry about them, but make sure not to visit their websites, either.

An Office Away From The Office

$

This July I was working at Coastal Offices (http://www.coastaloffices.com/) in Colwood. The experience has been great! A wonderful office away from the office. Let me share with you why I think this type of temporary office environment worked for me.

Just like our downtown office access is 24/7 and secure.  The available resources include:

  • Coffee (that’s important);
  • Internet (ya, kinda important too);
  • Printer/copier;
  • Washrooms and a shower (I’ve been biking a lot so this was a real plus).

There is a fantastic reception and support team. Eileen and Tom were always ready to help during normal business hours.

While discussing with a good friend of mine this type of working space we listed the fiscal benefits:

  1. No long term lease. There’s two options: hourly or monthly. This means you’re never committed to more than a month’s rent;
  2. Reduced overhead because you will not need: insurance, common fees, taxes, Internet;
  3. Commuting and parking. (My commute went from 35-45 minutes each way to 10-15 minutes.)

Now that July is over it means my time at Coastal Offices is complete. I’m going to miss all this – thank-you to everyone at Coastal Offices.
